Comprehension Games

Receptive language is the “input” of language, the ability to understand and comprehend spoken language that you hear or read. For example, a child’s ability to listen and follow directions, relies on the child’s receptive language skills. Children who are unable to comprehend language may have receptive language deficits. Children who have difficulty understanding language may struggle with the following:

  • Following directions

  • Answering questions

  • Identifying objects and pictures

  • Weak reading comprehension

  • Difficulty understanding stories

Many of the games recommended below are targeted for speech therapists to use in their session to improve comprehension skills. However, you can definitely use it at home with your child and just make sure not to take the fun out of the game. When the information you are working with is written on a card, then it may be best to read it out loud to your child, so they can work on strengthening their auditory comprehension skills.
