Phonemic Awareness Games
Phonological awareness, is the awareness of and ability to work with sounds in spoken language. This is often described as a pre-reading skill and sets the stage for decoding, blending, and, ultimately, word reading. Phonological awareness begins developing before the beginning of formal schooling and continues through third grade and beyond.
There are ways to work on strengthening your child’s phonemic awareness skills without any materials. Below are some easy ways to play phonemic games with your child.
1. I SPY- Play with classic I-spy game, but only tell them what the object you spy begins with. For example, “I spy something that starts with the letter ‘a’”, or when they get really good, then you can spy something the ends with the letter ‘r’.
2. RHYMING FUN: Give your child one word and see how many rhyming words they can come up. It can be silly words that don’t make sense but still rhyme. You can even have them make up silly sentences with the rhymes, such as “I found a tooth in my booth”.
3. CAN YOU GUESS THE WORD? Think of word and sound out the phonemes, then have the child guess the word. For example, sound out /d/, /o/, /g/ and see if they can blend the sounds in to the correct word.
